Othering

Several years ago I heard Fred Craddock speak at David Lipscomb University.  He was declared by Newsweek Magazine one of the top ten preachers in the United States.  In this speech/sermon he talked about “othering.”  An odd word.  As one might guess, the meaning is, “someone not like me but we can still be in relationship.”  That was my first though when I read the blurb by Brian Leung in an email from Poets and Writers Magazine.  It’s a short piece encouraging us to promote other writers and their work.  Check out his reasoning at http://www.pw.org/content/brian_leung.
